We’re back! This past week Girls’ Club started back up; it was so wonderful to see all the girls again! Because it’s Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and because the girls that come (and their friends) are the average age for being trafficked, we are doing an emphasis on human trafficking.
The subject of Human Trafficking can be really hard to talk about but we have truly bonded with these girls in such a way that we can talk about the hard things. I appreciate these girls so much and their willingness to ask questions and pay attention.
This week we reiterated the fact that trafficking isn’t just something that happens in a foreign country, but that it can happen in Tulsa and in our neighborhood. We encouraged them to be aware of the signs for themselves, their friends and those around them. We talked about 1 John 4 which talks about how God is love and how because of His love for us He tells us to go and love others. We want these girls to see that and have love for each other.
I think about this often, especially when I talk to others about this command to love because God has graciously loved us. I continue to realize the importance of preaching God’s love to ourselves and thinking about it in the context of loving girls who are in the sex industry. Sometimes it can be hard to love people that are different from you and that might be struggling with big issues. But this is exactly what God did in His greatest act of love. Christ, the perfect One, gave His life in love for people whose lives are ruined with so much sin. “But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8)
Human Trafficking Awareness month is so important, and we strongly encourage you to participate. Spread awareness in your area of influence. Tell people about the 27 million slaves in the world today and about the ways they and their loved ones are at risk or contributing to the problem. But the most important thing you can do is to love others. Show love to those in your life and reach out to those around you that might be struggling. There are a lot of people that need a lot of love. Some can speak for themselves and say they need love, and some want to cry out but can’t. Look for chances to love.
“…we also ought to love one another.” (1 John 4:11)
